The origin of light hydrocarbons

Webb12 dec. 2013 · Here, we consider the origin of solid hydrocarbons, also referred to as ‘carbon pools’. ‘Methane’ is used throughout to illustrate relationships for simplicity. All references to ‘methane’ or ‘CH 4 ’ should apply to the higher light hydrocarbons as well, although methane is the primary focus here. Webbhydrocarbons (oil), predominantly liquid, are almost exclusively the product of thermal generation from hydrogen-rich organic matter in deeply buried sediments (oil of microbial origin is unknown). This generation occurs at rates that become quantitatively important only as temperatures reach 90°-150°C

Webb5 juli 2024 · A method of base metal exploration in sedimentary rocks which depends on detecting anomalous amounts of the light hydrocarbon gas methane in the host rocks has been applied in a number of orientation surveys in the British Isles and in Europe. The results of these studies are described, and the limitations of the method discussed.

WebbHowever, considerable challenges remain: (1) the origins and genetic types of the natural gases are controversial; (2) the gas-source correlations are poorly studied; and (3) the migration distance is vague. In this study, these problems are addressed by the study of the gas compositions, light hydrocarbons, and stable hydrogen and carbon isotopes.
